Kersal   19 - 10   Sheffield

League

09 November 2008

The 'top-of-the-table' clash at Stelfox Avenue this Sunday between league leaders Sheffield, and our very own AK, was greeted with an afternoon of continuous rain that threatened to completely ruin any attempts at quality rugby. However these were teams whose skill levels over-rode the conditions; and with a referee whose command of the game we can on some Sundays only dream of, played out quite a thrilling match.
Each team played with a notable style and game plan: Sheffield were content to kick for territory and then contain any counter-attack, whilst AK seemed to concentrate on getting the ball to their power centres and supporting the runners with the back row forwards. It was Sheffield who broke the deadlock after 25 minutes as a long kick into the Kersal 22 was not cleanly dealt with and after a good chase Sheffield scored a try in the corner (unconverted). The next 15 minutes were difficult for AK as every time they got close to the Sheffield try line they would lose the ball and after the clearing kick, a lot of territory which had to be won back by tough runs and clinical rucking. Kersal's tennacity paid off though and just before the break, Anna charged through the Sheffield defensive line for a try (converted by Pam) and it was 7-5 at the break.
Half time saw the rain increase (as if that were possible) and the fans entertained themselves with a game of Name That Player
As so often happens to Kersal during a game, the opposition started a half with apparently more determination and Sheffield were back over the Kersal try line after only 2 minutes of the second half (unconverted). From then on it was much as it had been in the first half: Sheffield kicking it down field and Kersal running it back. Considering the determination and intensity on both sides (and the conditions) it was amazing each team tired so little, but it was Kersal who finally got control of the game through the ability to win almost every lineout, and an increase in dominance in the rucks that gave them the positional platform to score the tries that eventually won them the game.
After 22 minutes Hannah was helped over the try line (by most of the other AK forwards) and Pam slotted a crucial conversion to make it 14-10. But the game never really felt it was in the bag and the fans were still holding their breaths right until Anna once again broke through the Sheffield line to score in the corner with the last play of the game.
One of the most gripping and enthralling games the ladies have been involved with for ages and compliments from the sidelines go to both teams for making it so. And really, the ref was excellent! York RI away in 2 weeks: got your animal ready?
[Note from the Editor to the team - Having two Hannah's in a squad is confusing. Please sort out some nicknames a.s.a.p]

Kersal   93 - 0   Hartlepool

Friendly

12 October 2008

Hartlepool resigned from the league in November 2008. This match report has been left in to honour those who played, but individual scores have been removed from the 2008-09 season tally.
After the deluge of rain at Stelfox on Saturday, the AK team could have been expecting a bit of a quagmire for this game. But the water had drained well overnight and players and fans were treated to a beautiful late-summer afternoon with blue skies and bright sunshine. Perfect conditions for a team which has developed a fast moving, attacking style, willing to keep the ball alive at all times. Luckily for the home fans that team was Kersal. It took only 10 minutes for the flood gates to open and for Becky Hweson to score the first of Kersal's 15 tries. It was by no means a perfect display: there were still plenty of knock-ons and wayward throws to keep things interesting; but several players with little AK playing experiece acquitted themselves well. Rocky, Sian, Jade, Lottie and Gail [all new to me - Ed] had great games. The 15 minutes of scrummaging practice at the start of the second half was great fun.
To crow about the scoreline too much would be to disrespect the effort made by the Hartlepool team. For them to think they were going to travel with the bare minimum 15 players, and then only have 13 turn up for the coach, must have been extremely disappointing. However, their spirit and teamwork was a credit to them and their club.
From an AK perspective, the first match of the second post-Tasha era, was a highly entertaining and positive affair and will give them every confidence to believe that the league is theirs for the winning again this season.
